Dry brushing is an ancient ayurvedic technique that has been practiced for centuries. Ayurveda is the science of life in India, and dry brushing or gharsana is one of the many beneficial rituals that they practice. I first learned about this from Kimberly Snyder and Deepak Chopra's book, Radical Beauty. It is incredible how something so simple and inexpensive can have so many amazing benefits!

Within the past year, I have made dry brushing a consistent part of my pre-shower routine. I can truly say that it has made such a difference in the look and texture of my skin. Winter time can be harsh, especially for those of us who have naturally dry skin, so this time of the year is a great time to give your skin some extra love! After a long winter indoors with skin drying heat, we may not realize how much dead skin can accumulate on the surface, making it dull, dry and flaky. Dry brushing will make you glow head to toe, and it leaves you feeling refreshed, energized and rejuvenated.

Benefits

  • Improves blood circulation throughout entire body

  • Gets rid of dead skin cells, exfoliates and softens skin, helps to even out skin tone

  • Clears clogged pores and removes ingrown hairs

  • Helps the body eliminate waste and toxins from beneath the skin's surface, organs of elimination and the rest of the body more efficiently by activating lymph node drainage

  • Stimulates digestion

  • Helps to alleviate stress

Instructions

  • Find a good natural bristle brush (not synthetic), such as this one from Amazon. I have also seen them at Target, TJ Maxx, Whole Foods, and at most health food stores.

  • Beginning at your feet, brush upward toward your heart in long strokes for your entire legs, front and back, and do the same on your arms.

  • For all other areas of the body, brush in small circular motions

  • Do not press too hard, especially on the chest and neck area, and avoid extra sensitive areas like the face.

  • Spend about 2-3 minutes doing this

  • Follow by showering as usual.

  • For extra soft skin, apply a layer of unrefined coconut oil, shea or cocoa butter, sesame, almond, or argan oil. I usually do this, wait for the oil to soak in then apply a layer of my favorite lotion as well!

  • Be sure to wash your brush with soap or shampoo every couple of uses and let it dry somewhere that gets air, such as your windowsill.

This is a great rejuvenating self care practice to start this spring! Incorporate this practice into your pre-shower routine and not only will it help you to feel great and eliminate toxins, it will make your skin extra glowy and refreshed in no time. Happy dry brushing!☺
